What Is Lucid Dreaming?
What actually is Lucid Dreaming?
Here’s a basic definition – It’s the proven scientific ability to become ‘self aware’ in your dreams.
This means you KNOW you’re dreaming and as such are able to control the dream, fly around, explore your mind and do whatever you can imagine. As Lucid Dreaming is the art of becoming self aware in the dream-world, you can do anything.. Normally, when you dream, you’re not really aware of what’s going on, you can’t actively think about things and make your own decisions.
It’s almost like you’re just watching yourself do the actions, but you’re not in control. When you have a Lucid Dream however, You become aware of yourself, and the fact that you’re dreaming. You can make decisions, explore and control the dream-world, and pretty much do anything you can imagine. You could fly around the world, meet a celebrity, practice your job interview, or ride around on a giant butterfly; there is no limit to what you can do.
The reason people are able to have a lucid dreaming experience is that they can ‘wake up their mind’ and experience things while they’re sleeping. Normally when you go to sleep, your brain sort of shuts off and you’re not aware of what’s going on. With training and practice you can unlock the part of your mind responsible for being ‘aware’ of yourself.
Is It real?
Yes, Lucid Dreaming is very real and it’s been proven time and time again. There are lots of studies and lots of research you can find about this, but to get started (If you’re inclined to read through the research) check out the Wiki page for Lucid Dreaming. This will give you more detailed information about the science of it all. For more, see our article ‘Is Lucid Dreaming Real‘.
Hopefully you now know what it actually is, because there’s a lot of skewed information out there. Some people claim it’s essentially fantasy and doesn’t have any real world implications, and others are confused as to how it differs from Astral Projection. Overall, it’s a fantastic thing to learn and it could very well change your life.
So Why Should I Learn It?
Lucid Dreaming as mentioned above is the ability to become self aware in your dreams. That’s the basics of it, but it can be used for many, many things. (We have a list of 40 things you could do in a lucid dream, as well as a list of lucid dreaming benefits).
A form of escapism – It can be used as a way to escape from the things in your waking life that you might not like. It provides a way of being in your own world and not having to worry about things like paying your bills or your boring job, (for a while at least). It can be used to relax after work or to help you get a better nights sleep.
It can improve your life – Prolonged lucid dreaming is able to improve your life, through emotional healing, removing fear, upping your confidence and overcoming nightmares. There are many things it can be used for, but these are covered in other posts on this site. Read on!
Why waste your dreams? – Every night people go to sleep, and every night everyone dreams. You read that right, everyone dreams every night. That being known, the question ‘Why waste your dreams’ arises. If everyone is dreaming every night, and Lucid Dreaming is real and proven then what good reason could ANYONE have for not wanting to learn it?!
Is It Scary?
You may be wondering whether it’s scary or not, and the answer to this really depends. Of course, it’s something new and will be the formation of a new habit when you learn, but some parts of it can be a little frightening depending on each person!
It’s important to remember though, that by learning this skill you’re able to overcome nightmares, so it won’t be as much of a problem the longer you practice it.

Is It Dangerous?
Alright, this one is just not true. There are some people who think lucid dreaming can be dangerous, but that’s just not true. All it is, is becoming self aware in your dreams. You will run into your subconscious mind, and be able to talk to it but that’s not dangerous.
It allows you to see yourself for who you really are, and solve emotional issues, as well as fly around beautiful mountains and explore alien worlds.
