What Are Lucid Nightmares

A nightmare is a dream that contains stuff that you do not wish to see.

It might take the shape of a feeling, a scene, something following you, or even a frightening or uncomfortable scenario. These are some of the most common nightmares.

Those are the most prevalent, with falling and being chased being the top 2 on the list. Does this sound familiar? They are most common during REM or rapid eye movement sleep when the brain is most active.

If you’ve studied the Science of Dreams, you’ll know that Lucid Dreams are most likely to occur during REM sleep. This implies that when you experience nightmares, you’re also most likely to be able to lucid dream.

Something isn’t quite right here. Why are nightmares occurring while you should be having Lucid Dreams during REM sleep?

Nightmares may occur during REM sleep if you are not at ease, you had an unpleasant encounter in your childhood, you recently experienced a bad incident, you have fears or traumas that are yet to be addressed or overcome, or you watch a lot of horror movies.

Nightmares become lucid nightmares when you experience them while you’re lucid, meaning, you are aware that you are dreaming.

This gives you an advantage really. Because you can then will yourself to change the dream like a director.

You can turn it from horror into a comedy. For example, you’re being chased by a ghost. Stop and start chasing them instead.

By the way, I have this free video training that can help you control your lucid dreams.

What Causes Lucid Nightmares

When you can’t wake up, your subconscious may be trying to help. Is your life, for example, filled with a lot of stress? Are you suffering from emotional or mental turmoil because of a decision?

How you deal with stress has a big impact on your emotional and psychological well-being. There are, however, some possible reasons for being trapped in a lucid dream or nightmare.

One of the most common reasons lucid dreams turn into scary lucid dreaming nightmares is sleep paralysis.

sleep paralysis

Sleep paralysis is a terrifying experience in which you are unable to move but are fully aware typically as shadowy creatures roam about your bed.

It occurs because REM sleep has not yet ended. This means your brain is awake, and motion impulses to your muscles are delayed for a few minutes.

Hallucinations are usually connected with sleep apnea and last barely a few seconds.

This is where the sleep paralysis demon comes in. No, don’t be scared. I don’t mean it literally.

The ‘demon’ of sleep paralysis is nothing more than a hallucination that occurs sometimes in sleep paralysis, yet it feels real.

It can be a frightening image. People have reported everything, the internet is flooded with horror stories about these hallucinations.

Horror films have also been written on the experience. Many people have seen dark figures such as shadow men or men with hats, or have felt someone sitting on their chest.

It’s an intruder’s apparition, a presence that hovers above you and observes you. Doesn’t that sound like a frightening nightmare?

But it’s just a hallucination. That’s really all it is, but your mind is awake, which makes it a lot scarier. There are several horror stories.

Are Lucid Nightmares Dangerous

The concept of an invader or a supernatural menace, while you are entirely powerless, is one of the most horrifying, yet it is only in your mind.

Whatever presence you see or feel is only a projection of the worries we already have.

We all have unique fears; your brain is merely recreating an image of whatever previously frightened or worried you.

Take, for example, the name ‘the devil’. It’s a moniker that, like it or not, has a largely Christian background and is unique to our society, with the ‘devil’ alluding to a wicked and highly offensive person. It will be known differently in other nations and cultures.

With the internet, people get to share stories with platforms like Reddit so it’s those shared fears that drive entirely unrelated people to see the same invader in their hallucinations.

Dark figures feature in almost every horror film or novel. Where have we seen the little more precise image, the man with a hat, before?

There have been at least eleven films featuring the figure of Freddy Kreuger, and most of you have probably heard of him. How does he discover his victims? In their sleep.

It’s no surprise that so many people see such a figure in their hallucinations Because the character is already implanted in our thoughts.

We only see what we’ve previously seen, the ones we’ve already feared.

Our mind is afraid of the unfamiliar so it will scream “danger” especially if you’ve never had sleep paralysis before.

But it’s not actually dangerous. You’re just scored but you won’t be harmed.

But if you want to stop having lucid dreaming nightmares and just keep having the one where you’re in Hogwarts, this blog post tells you how to avoid having lucid nightmares.

Lucid Dreaming Horror Stories

1: The House Intruder

One night I woke up to what I thought was the sound of footsteps in the hallway, but I was lying on my back, which immediately made me confused and a bit nervous because I never sleep on my back.

I tried to turn my head to see where the sound was coming from, but I couldn’t move. So I guess sleep paralysis. The panic set in and I heard the sound of footsteps coming into my room.

Although I could not see the figure, I knew it was a home invader. I could feel him standing on the opposite side of my bed silently staring down at me.

He had some kind of weapon in his right hand. I think it was a knife. My heart has never dropped and raced like that in my entire life.

I kept trying to move or scream, but it felt like I was frozen. It felt like hours.

And that story was from Ginger Oblivion on Reddit.

2: The White-Faced Troll

Suddenly I realized that I saw something in the corner of my peripheral vision and I could hear it breathing.

When I slowly rolled my eyes to the side, I thought I saw the small head of a white-faced troll grinning and staring at me.

I panicked and suddenly all the phones in my house started ringing. The ringing sound got louder and louder and it scared me because I knew for sure that I was going to have trouble going back to sleep tonight as a result of this dream.

After this short moment that felt like a really long time, I finally had enough strength to locate and lift my arm.

As soon as I did that, all the hallucinations stopped and I woke up, and that was from Eyethundered on Reddit.

3: The Chest Sitter

The next one.

My mind woke up and my entire body, including my face, was under the covers and unable to move. I couldn’t see a thing.

I was worried for a moment when I discovered that I couldn’t move, and then things got even scarier.

I felt an enormous amount of pressure on my chest and I had the feeling as though this spirit or entity had its face only inches away from my face.

If this wasn’t enough, I heard inaudible whispers in both ears and pounding on the wall next to my bed.

I began to cry because that was all I could physically do in my mind.

I was screaming as loud as I could, but nothing came out. I began to struggle and I finally woke up. I sat up immediately and I was still crying, but the room was silent.

That was from Thisisnotmyuser31.

4: Falling And Being Chased

The other night I had a dream that someone I knew who was very rich and powerful chose me as an enemy for some reason and tossed me out of a window.

I lived through, the fall, and I remember sensing that he had a gun and if he saw that I was alive he’d shoot at me and he did when I got up and ran away.

After running for some time I made it to the train station but all I could think was where could I go?

Someone with money literally could find me anywhere I went. What would happen to my home, my family, and all my things? Where am I going to go?

So knowing I was in a dream, I forced myself to wake up and I’ve been really tired all day cause interacting with a dream makes me that way.

That was from Thedood715.

5: Fighting A Devil

Had a fight with a devil inside a church. He took the form of a shadow that covered the walls.

His disembodied voice was this kind of rumbling growl that filled the room and caused all the metal inside to crumple up, like the candle holders and such.

Eventually, I was shoved up against a wall, screaming for help when nearby people heard and ran in to help.

My body was taken over by him and I started attacking them.

Then I woke up panting and sweating. It took me a full 5 minutes to get my breathing and heart rate back to normal.

That story was from Lakeside.
